GREENER
ABOUT THE FILM
"GREENER" is the mixed-media CalArts thesis film by Mark Osborne, shot on 16mm film, completed in 1994. It is a twisted portrait of two creatures safely confined inside a complex support system of their own creation. One character eerily controls the static comfort of the situation, while the other innocently follows his instincts to discover what lays outside their sheltered existence. This bizarre and darkly humorous film is in essence an animated search for the self, journeying from one medium to the next.
'THE BIRTH OF GREENER' MAKING OF DOCUMENTARY
The first animated short film created by Mark Osborne began while he was a student in the Experimental Animation department at CalARTS in 1991. It was a bold and ambitious film, born out of a nightmare and a deep need for therapy to deal with the pressure and stresses of moving all the way to California from the east coast where he grew up. The making of the film was documented in great detail by Mat Hames at Alpheus Media, for the DVD release in partnership with It is described as a hauntingly beautiful glimpse into a mechanical world. This half-hour documentary was produced using archival material and new interviews to explore the making of this pivotal and bold short film.
